One to one coaching is fast becoming the preferred and most effective management and staff development tool.

What is Corporate Coaching?
Coaching within an organisation is an interactive process that is designed to help individuals to develop rapidly. It is usually work related and focused on improving performance or behaviour. It is a goal-orientated form of personally tailored learning. The essential features of coaching within an organisation are that it is a short term, time limited, paid for, goals specific, action orientated, personally tailored approach to learning. Corporate coaching utilises feedback and offers some objectivity.
Corporate coaching involves coaching towards organisational goals. Just as a football coach coaches a football team, a corporate coach coaches an organisation, focusing on the corporate team and corporate vision, mission, values and strategy.
Results are measured against the performance requirements of the organisation.
Benefits and Research
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have produced some very important documents. Their ‘Coaching and Buying Coaching Services’, produced in 2004 is a good example. Written by Jessica Jarvis, it covers subjects such as:
- The current position of coaching
- The key players in the coaching relationship
- Making a case for coaching
- Choosing the right coach
- Managing the onward coaching engagement
Its respondents are typically the HR professionals in the organisations. Its findings include:
- 79% of responding organisations use coaching
- 78% cite improving individual performance as the main objective
- The highest category of people receiving coaching are junior manager/team leader/supervisor and middle managers
- 99% of respondents agree that coaching can deliver tangible benefits to both individuals and organisations
- 93% of respondents agree that coaching and mentoring are key mechanisms for transferring learning from training courses back to the workplace
- 92% agree that when coaching is managed effectively it can have a positive impact on an organisation’s bottom line.
It also cites a MetrixGlobal LLC survey that coaching produced a 528% return on investment alongside significant intangible benefits to the business.
Given the number of HR professionals who are members of the CIPD, if your market is UK corporate it could well be worth reading this, as they probably have.
The International Coaching Federation Survey concluded the following benefits from coaching:
- 98.5% felt the investment was worthwhile
- 85% wanted a sounding board
- 78% wanted a motivator
- Over 50% experience greater self-awareness, self-confidence and improved goal setting and business results
- 40% wanted help with goal setting - especially financial
- 40% felt coaching enhanced their communication skills
- 33% felt they had more fun in the workplace
- 25% felt Coaching had enhanced their income

What is the difference between a Corporate Coach and other similar professionals?
The key difference:
- Trainer
- A trainer deals with input of knowledge and skill
- Mentor
- A Mentor focuses on an industry or subject matter and helps to carve a pathway through the organisation
- Consultant
- A Consultant diagnoses and recommends solutions to organisations at a macro level on strategic and cultural issues
- Manager
- A Manager sets direction, manages process and performance
- Counsellor
- Counselling is about fixing / helping people without the strength or the inner resources to do so themselves (something anchors people into the past which blocks them going forwards)
- Coach
- A corporate coach helps people achieve their goals by using their own inner resources. It is focused on the future.

Corporate Coaches are detached outsiders and independent thinkers (of the organisation) who can reflect ideas, evoke solutions and support their implementation in ways that no insider ever could

Coaching sessions are uniquely tailored to your situation.
You can have as many or as few sessions as you want or need. Many people find that a single 90-minute session solves their immediate need, while others want a few more, especially if it's been an issue they've lived with for a long time.

What happens during a coaching session
You'll be asked to think beforehand about what you would like to have happen as a result of the coaching, i.e. what’s the point of spending time and money with a coach - and your answer to that question will be the focus of our attention to begin with.
We will meet with you to establish where you want to get to, where you are now and how long it will take to close the gap and how.
Sometimes one session is all that is needed to clarify goals and remove the often self- inflicted barriers.
In between sessions, you'll be given tasks to help further your understanding of your own thinking and behaviour patterns.
